Discounts can be created and applied in a variety of ways in Shopify. Loop wants to reflect those discounts accurately through the return process for your customers and for your team.

In this article, we highlight the types of discounts that can be applied, how Loop handles each, and Pro Tips for creating discounts that provide the promotions you’re looking for while integrating gracefully with Loop.

Types of discounts applied in Shopify

  • Percentage
  • Fixed Amount
  • Free Shipping
  • Automatic
  • Script
  • Manual
  • Buy X get Y

Percentage

A percentage discount provides percentage off an entire order, collection, product, and/or variant. A percentage discount can be applied to an entire order or line item.

When a percentage discount is applied, Loop spreads the discount value proportionally across associated line items.

Example: This is a percentage discount for 50% off an entire order

The order in Shopify:

The items in Loop show that each item is discounted by 50%. This is the order level 50% off spread across each item in the order.

Selecting to return the Charcoal Tweed Snap discounted to $99, the customer would receive a refund back to their original payment method totaling $106.42 (tax included).

The customer is also refunded the tax value paid for that item which is $7.42. Guidance for this amount is reflected in the Shopify order showing the county and state taxes. There is no handling fee associated with this Loop account.

Fixed Amount

Gives a fixed amount off an entire order, collection, product, and/or variants. Can be applied to an entire order or line item.

When a fixed amount discount is applied, Loop spreads the discount value across line items proportionally. No one item could receive the full $50 off but the discount must still be accounted for, regardless of the item being returned.

Example: This is a fixed amount discount for $50 off an entire order

The order in Shopify:

The items in Loop show that $50 off is spread across each item as a proportion of the value of that item.

What do we mean when we say “spread across each item as a proportion to the value of that item”?

The subtotal of this order without the discount is $318. Each item in the order is receiving a portion of that $50 discount:

Free Shipping

Who doesn’t love free shipping? This gives customers free shipping on their order. Loop will disregard this discount as it does not reduce the cost of the items or the order as a whole.

Automatic

Discounts that apply automatically at checkout and cannot be combined with another discount type. Applied to the line item.

Currently, this discount can be applied in 2 ways:

  1. Fixed amount or percentage off product and/or variants
  2. Fixed amount or percentage off product and/or variants when a specific product, variant, or collection is also purchased

To see how each of these appear in Loop, reference Fixed Amount and Percentage above.

Script

Script discounts are created with the Script Editor in Shopify and apply to the line item. Discounts applied using a script could facilitate the application of a number of discount types, including:

  • Percentage
  • Amount
  • Percentage (%) and Amount ($)
  • Bulk Discount
  • Buy One, Get One (BOGO)
  • Blank template, the world is your oyster when it comes to discounts

Loop will acknowledge and reflect script discounts on the line item, in the same way the discount is reflected in Shopify.

Referencing the order used in the above examples, if a script discount were used to take $10 off of the Charcoal Tweed Snap and 25% off each item in the order, the order would appear in Loop as—

BOGO with Loop

When buy one get one is applied with a script, the discount is applied to the associated line items.

Sticking with the same order example, buy one Charcoal Tweed Snap get one Heavyweight Henley for free:

Manual

The discount is a percentage or fixed amount applied to the order. The discount is applied  when creating an order manually in Shopify.

Discounts applied manually will behave like the percentage and fixed amount discounts outlined above.

Buy X get Y

Discount that applies based on the products purchased. This differs from BOGO in that it could be more than 1 for 1.

This discount can be applied in 2 ways:

  1. Fixed amount off specific products, variants, or collections only when another specific product, variant, or collection is also purchased
  2. Percentage off specific products, variants, or collections only when another specific product, variant, or collection is also purchased
